Dixmoor police credit saturation patrol with 22 traffic stops and eight arrests

Police Chief Lanell Smith told the Village of Dixmoor Board on Thursday that a targeted enforcement detail called "Operation Light of the Night" produced a string of enforcement results intended to curb crashes and impaired driving.
"The police department had a saturation patrol called 'light of the night,'" Chief Lanell Smith said, summarizing the six-hour detail that ran from 10 p.m. on Aug. 17 to 4 a.m. on Aug. 18. "During that 6 hours, we had 22 traffic stops. Out of those traffic stops, 8 arrests. We did have 1 criminal arrest misdemeanor, 1 DUI arrest ... rolled 16 local ordinance citations and totaled 3 vehicles."
The chief said the detail targeted common crash contributors — speed, impaired driving, electronic-device use and failure to yield — and described the operation as a pilot program the department intends to continue. Trustees did not challenge the numbers during the report but acknowledged the department's effort.
The police presentation was delivered during the meeting's reports section and followed routine roll call and opening remarks. The chief emphasized that the department will continue enforcement operations and monitor their effect on traffic safety.
The board did not take a policy vote on the report. The next procedural step is ordinary oversight: trustees may request follow-up data or additional briefings at a future meeting.
