Boulder City golf operations steady; turf replacement bids exceed budget by about $3 million

Boulder City parks staff told commissioners Sept. 22 that both Muni and Creek golf courses are seeing steady rounds and revenue compared with the prior year, and routine maintenance is under way.
Jennifer Sprinkling said the city will host state high-school golf tournaments for Class 3A, 4A and 5A schools at Creek and Muni this October, which staff view as a positive for course visibility and revenue.
On maintenance, staff are replacing the pump motor at Lake 6/9 at Muni to restore pond circulation and have airified greens at both courses. “It’s a busy time, year for golf in the valley,” Sprinkling said.
Sprinkling reported that turf-replacement bids came back “quite a bit over budget, little bit meaning 3,000,000.” She said staff and the City Council will determine the next steps in response to the higher-than-expected bids. In the meantime, staff plan a smaller turf reduction at Muni and an expanded cart-staging area as an interim measure.
Why it matters: Turf replacement can be a major capital expense affecting maintenance budgets and playing conditions. The over-budget bids will likely require either budget adjustments, scope changes, or staged work that reduces upfront costs.
The commission had no further questions on the golf report at the meeting.
