Gulf County adopts gun-range policy with limited waivers for service members and law enforcement

The Gulf County Board of County Commissioners adopted an ordinance establishing policies and procedures for the county gun range after a second public hearing.
Staff described changes made since the initial hearing: membership and gun-safety training requirements would be waived for current active military, retired military and law enforcement, and language that created confusion about carrying a holstered firearm on the range line was removed. The ordinance references Florida statutes on gun-range safety and sets rules for enforcement and codification into county code.
Commissioners asked clarifying questions about who qualifies for a waiver (for example, whether a long-ago correctional officer would still qualify), and staff said active certification would be required for law enforcement and that retired or out-of-date credentials would not qualify without current membership or an equivalent safety certification.
No members of the public opposed the ordinance during the hearing. A motion to adopt the ordinance was made, seconded and passed unanimously (5–0).
Next steps: The ordinance will be codified per the staff presentation, and administrative staff will manage membership and eligibility verification as the county implements the range policy.
