Madison County board sets Weisenberger Road hearing, approves insurance buy-down and routine contracts

The Madison County Board of Supervisors on March 16 authorized staff to advertise a public hearing for the Weisenberger Road Improvements project, approved an insurance storm buy-down, accepted routine donations and contracts, and heard a staffing update from the Extension office.
Tim Bryant introduced the Weisenberger Road Improvements item as part of the environmental phase and said the county needs public involvement "after we get approval from FHWA and MDOT" before holding a public hearing. The board approved advertising the hearing so the public may review alternatives and provide comment.
Sandy Havard, the county coordinator from the Madison County Extension Office, introduced the new Ag and Natural Resources agent, Eli Odom, who began work earlier in February. Havard provided the office contact as (601) 859-3842 and Odom supplied his email: teo38@msstate.edu. "He's familiar with this county, and so I think he's gonna be a great asset to the citizens and our clients," Havard said.
On insurance, staff recommended adding a severe convective storm buy-down costing an additional $70,000 to keep the county deductible at $50,000 rather than applying a 1% value-based deductible for very high-value buildings. "It's an additional $70,000, but it keeps our deductible ... to $50,000 instead of 1% of the value," the presenter said; the board approved the request.
The board also approved a film permit request for a production that may use simulated gunfire and loud effects near the courthouse; Canton Police and the Madison County Sheriff's Office will coordinate public-safety measures. Members accepted a donation of lunch from First Baptist Church of Madison for county employees on March 19 and approved a standard AIA contract to rebuild the Camden Community Center on the existing site.
Finance staff presented budget amendments, cash transfers and the general claims/payroll dockets. A supervisor requested that FleetCor items be removed from the general claims docket and voted on separately; the board acknowledged the request while moving forward with approval of the dockets.
From the Sheriff's Office, Jeremy asked the clerk to receive the February 2026 inmate mill log and requested authorization to bill the Mississippi Department of Corrections $3,943.60 for January 2026; both items were approved by voice vote.
The board set its next meeting for April 6 at 9:00 a.m. and adjourned.
