Local opioid abatement program reports first-quarter progress: housing help, medication-assisted treatment and Narcan distribution

A representative of the local opioid abatement program presented the initiative’s first quarterly report and described three core service lines: housing-first assistance to stabilize people before or during treatment, medication-assisted treatment that combines FDA-approved medications with counseling and wraparound services, and community and family education focused on prevention and early intervention.
The presenter said the program began staffing and policy development in October, ramped up promotion in November and provided Narcan kits at a December mental-health awareness night at the McAlester High School basketball game. The program has coordinated with local partners including schools and outreach groups and distributed Narcan to community partners that respond to encampments and outreach calls.
Staff said the city received opioid-abatement funds and will coordinate funding splits with McAlester Schools to maximize impact. The council thanked presenters and noted ongoing coordination and training needs for city staff.
What’s next: staff will continue promoting services, scheduling trainings for city staff, and coordinating with partnering organizations for outreach and program delivery.
