Summary
A community historian showed board members a 54-minute documentary about Maple Heights alumni and history and proposed using it as a classroom resource (recommended for seventh grade). The district agreed to receive and pilot the film and the presenter said donations will support Little Red Schoolhouse scholarships.
Mike Milkovich Jr., a local historian invited by Superintendent Dela Flora, told the Maple Heights City School Board about a 54-minute documentary he produced that profiles the city’s history and notable alumni and suggested it be used in seventh-grade classrooms.
Milkovich said the film uses interviews with alumni and local archival material to illustrate how the community and its schools shaped graduates’ careers. “This program can be used as a 1 or 2 day or a 2 day to 5 day lesson,” he said, adding that the program is 54 minutes long and that the package includes questions for classroom discussion and suggested projects.
Dela Flora thanked Milkovich for reaching out and said the district will circulate the film and related materials to teachers. She noted the district already posts enrollment and family outreach materials online and welcomed resources that strengthen local history instruction.
Milkovich said he will e-mail board members the film and provide a contact sheet so teachers can get access, and that the cost of offering the film to the district was zero. He also said the project includes an alumni donation appeal: donations to the Little Red Schoolhouse would be routed to the Maple Heights Foundation for scholarships.
Board members expressed support for classroom use and for making the film available to families. The board did not take a vote on curricular adoption during the meeting; staff said they would pilot the film and work with teachers on lesson plans and schedules.
