Commission staff announce preservation awards, appeals update and pending appointment recommendation

Andrea Burke, supervisor for the historic preservation team in the Department of Community Planning and Economic Development, updated the commission on recent recognitions and administrative matters at the March 24 meeting.
Burke said the Minneapolis Preservation Awards, held at the Granada Theater in early March, included two recognitions tied to work her team supported: an award for the African American Heritage Work Group (grassroots category) and recognition for the African American Historic and Cultural Context Studies. She noted consultants and team members accepted awards and said the honors help turn planning documents into more actionable items.
Burke also summarized recent appeals: an appeal regarding a siding project at 201 Franklin Avenue East was granted to allow vinyl siding that had been installed without a permit; a separate demolition appeal for a property on 1750th Street West was heard by the committee of the whole and forwarded to city council without recommendation and will be taken up again by council in two days.
On appointments, Burke reported the committee of the whole recommended Paris Smith to fill Commissioner Harris’ seat; that recommendation will go to city council on Thursday and is not final until council acts. Burke encouraged commissioners to consider registering for the National Alliance of Preservation Commissions forum conference, to be held locally in July, and said registration information will be circulated.
Burke said she will follow up by email with registration links and that staff may be able to identify funding support for commissioner attendance at conferences. The announcements concluded the staff update portion of the agenda.
