Summary
At the March 23 meeting the committee approved an out-of-state field trip to the Culinary Institute of America, accepted gifts/grants with an amendment removing Project Lead the Way pending donor verification, approved student activity accounts for new clubs, and authorized submission of an MSBA Statement of Interest for a Lawrence School core project.
The Holyoke School Committee on March 23 approved several motions and referrals in routine business and authorized a step toward a facility project for the Lawrence School.
Field trip: The committee voted to approve an out-of-state field trip to the Culinary Institute of America (Hyde Park, N.Y.) on May 4, 2026. The motion was moved by Mr. Michaelson and seconded by Ms. LeRoy Martinez and passed on a roll-call vote.
Gifts and grants: Committee members moved to accept the gifts and grants report but amended the motion to remove the Project Lead the Way item pending identification of the donor. The amendment passed by roll call and the revised acceptance carried.
Budget transfers and referrals: The committee voted to refer budget transfers covering legal services, pupil services, contracted services, workers' comp, unemployment and utilities to the Finance & Operations Subcommittee for further review.
Student activities: The committee approved creation of two student activity accounts (poetry club and sports management club) at Holyoke High School so the clubs could fundraise and use a district student-activity account structure for deposits and requisitions.
MSBA Statement of Interest: The Finance & Operations Subcommittee recommended and the full committee authorized the interim superintendent to submit a Statement of Interest (SOI) to the Massachusetts School Building Authority dated April 17, 2026, for a core replacement project at H.B. Lawrence School (156 Cabot St.). The SOI cites undersized classrooms, failing plumbing and heat systems, lack of air conditioning and inaccessible restrooms and doorways; presenters noted that submitting an SOI does not guarantee MSBA funding or approval and that city council approval will also be required for future steps.
Stop-arm cameras recommendation: The committee voted to recommend that the City Council consider adopting M.G.L. c.40, §71 (a school-violation detection statute) to permit exploring stop-arm stop-arm camera programs on school buses; members discussed vendor revenue-sharing models, procurement and possible municipal costs.
Several other routine items—approval of warrants, meeting minutes and referrals for contract reviews—were also approved by roll call during the meeting.
