Board temporarily lowers speed limit on haul route for Southbridge interchange work

Woodbury County’s engineering staff presented and the Board of Supervisors approved a temporary speed-limit resolution reducing the posted limit to 35 miles per hour on Banner Avenue and on a stretch of 235th Street to accommodate construction traffic for the Southbridge interchange.
County engineer Laura Severs said the contractor plans to use local gravel roads to move borrow material and that increased heavy traffic will wear dust-control treatments quickly; the lower speed is intended to reduce dust, protect road surface integrity and improve safety when large trucks use otherwise low-volume gravel routes. Severs said the temporary change would likely be for the duration of the construction effort—about two years—and that the county would send letters to affected landowners explaining the decision.
Supervisors agreed lowering speeds and requiring dust-control measures would improve safety and reduce community impacts from construction traffic. The resolution passed unanimously, recorded as 5-0.
