City officials told attendees that data collection for a study on disengaged youth is on target to finish by April and that results will be released to the community this summer or later in the year; Dr. Brown said the study has nearly 1,200 student participants so far.
A central question from the public asked when the city's study of disengaged youth would be completed and shared. Dr. Sharron Brown told the room the project was on schedule.
"Right now, we are on target ... to complete the collection of data by April, and we are on target to release the data to the community this summer at the end of at closer to the end of the year," Brown said, adding that the city plans a public release though the format had not yet been finalized.
Brown framed the research as designed to be generalizable and said the project originally needed about 357 student participants to be valid. "To date, we have almost 1,200 students participating," she said, underscoring that student voices will inform how the city and district shape outreach to the estimated 3,000 disengaged youth in St. Petersburg.
Superintendent Kevin Hendrick added that the district and university partners must follow institutional review-board procedures and student-privacy protections, which contributed to the research's administrative timeline. He described the district's role as ensuring protections for student participants while facilitating the study.
Officials said the city intends to make results public and will work with community partners to determine how findings are released and used to design programs aimed at re-engaging youth in education and work.
