Board approves teacher depot, student election internships and several budget increases

The Blount County Board of Education approved several program and budget items intended to support teachers, offer student civic internships and update district equipment.
Dr. Whitehead described a teacher supply depot to be hosted at William Blount Ninth Grade Academy that will be open one Saturday a month from 9 a.m. to noon, free for all teachers with early access for new teachers; supplies will be solicited from churches, the Blount County Education Foundation and the community. The board voted to establish the depot.
The board also approved a partnership with the Blount County Election Commission (introduced at the meeting as Mr. Click) to offer high‑school students an election‑day internship assisting with polling‑place technology and operations. Dr. Whitehead said the internship offers hands‑on civic education and resume experience for students; the board approved the program.
On finance items the board approved: a $199,412 transfer from other charges to maintenance and repair accounts (Fund 141); a $261,456.96 increase in Fund 177 (Education Capital) for food‑service equipment purchases at multiple schools; and an $86,525.46 increase in Fund 177 to purchase 21 network devices, for total adjustments of about $547,394.42. Each item was moved, seconded and approved by voice vote; no recorded opposition was noted.
Board members thanked staff for bringing forward the CTE building work and noted these budget items allow previously planned purchases to proceed. Administrative staff will implement the approved programs and process the procurement and donation logistics.
