Council authorizes contract up to $133.6M to buy 109 hybrid-electric buses

The Metropolitan Council on March 11 authorized the regional administrator to negotiate and execute contract 26P058 with Gillig LLC to purchase 109 40-foot hybrid-electric buses in an amount not to exceed $133,602,701.71.
Council Member Barber presented the item, describing the procurement as using the Washington State master contract and a joint-powers agreement that allows purchases from that master contract. "This procurement is for 109 40 foot Gillig electric hybrid buses, 12 of which are for A-line replacement and 24 for G line implementation and 79 for local route service," Barber said.
Barber told the council staff verified that the Washington agreement complies with Federal Transit Administration standards and said the buses are included in the capital improvement plan. Full funding was described as contingent on a capital business item to be presented later in March. Barber said the purchase uses a mix of federal and local funds, including a $35,000,000 low- or no-emission grant awarded to Metro Transit in 2025.
The council moved and voted in favor of authorizing the contract; the chair announced the motion carries. The authorization directs the regional administrator to execute the contract subject to funding confirmation and related capital approvals.
