Chesapeake Public Schools details CPI preschool capacity and application deadlines

Chesapeake Public Schools' prerecorded Family Empowerment Webinar outlined enrollment and program details for the Chesapeake Preschool Initiative (CPI), a state-funded, full-day preschool program for four-year-olds.
"We currently are able to have 360 students in the program, and we maintain an active wait list for each of our sites," said Lauren Perez, CPI supervisor. She said CPI runs 20 classrooms with 18 students per classroom, and every classroom has two Chesapeake Public Schools employees: a teacher and a teacher assistant.
Perez said CPI follows district hours and the Chesapeake Public Schools calendar, provides bus transportation for students attending their designated CPI school, and uses the Unified Virginia Quality Birth-to-5 (VQB5) monitoring and enhancement system aligned to the Virginia Department of Education standards.
Families who wish to apply must complete a two-part application process that includes preregistration and a questionnaire. Perez emphasized that families who do not yet have other children in Chesapeake Public Schools should create a ParentVUE account, while families with current CPS students should use their existing ParentVUE to add a CPI preregistration. Families who already have a current preschooler enrolled in Chesapeake Public Schools or who are reverse mainstream students are instructed to submit a CPI interest form instead of creating a ParentVUE preregistration.
Perez cautioned that not all applicants will be placed immediately: "Due to this format, please understand that we are not a first come first serve program," and the district maintains site-specific wait lists. She noted that all applicant statuses will be emailed in the first week of July and that completed applications submitted prior to June 15 will be screened for the first wave of offers; applications submitted after June 15 or incomplete applications will be placed on the wait list and considered later.
The CPI schedule includes two meals a day, a one-hour nap and outdoor recess, and structured instructional time; state-approved assessments are administered up to three times a year to monitor math, literacy and social-emotional growth. Perez encouraged families to complete physical and immunization documentation promptly if a spot is offered, because those records will be required to enroll but are not required to submit an application.
The district provides CPI guidance and application instructions on its website and through the CPI office for families with questions.
