Summary
The board authorized the township supervisor to sign participation documents to opt in to a national settlement with six remnant defendants; the packet estimates roughly $97.6 million nationwide and requires opt-in by May 4, 2026. Funds must be used for opioid abatement consistent with national guidelines.
The Canton Charter Township Board of Trustees voted to authorize the township supervisor to execute documents needed for Canton to participate in a new national opioid settlement covering six remnant defendants.
The meeting packet said the settlement will distribute approximately $97,600,000 nationwide to participating local governments for opioid abatement purposes. Supervisor Grama Hudak said Canton is an eligible entity and could receive a direct one-time allocation if it elects to participate. "Participation requires the township to opt in by executing a combined subdivision participation and release form no later than 05/04/2026," the packet and the supervisor noted.
Board discussion was brief; staff said proceeds must be used for abatement strategies consistent with approved national guidelines, including prevention, treatment and recovery efforts. Trustee questions were limited and no additional conditions were imposed. Clerk Segrist moved to authorize the supervisor to execute all necessary documents; the motion passed by voice vote.
The authorization does not yet allocate funds to specific programs; any distribution to Canton and subsequent appropriation will follow the settlement’s guidance and local budgeting processes.
