Warren council approves funding and contract changes for smart bus shelters

The Warren City Council voted March 10 to approve funding and procurement actions to install three smart bus shelters in the city.
Parks and public service staff said the project will place two shelters at 13 Mile and Shaner (northbound and westbound near Kroger) and one at Dequindre north of 9 Mile. Staff said the city will apply community credits from SMART to cover part of the cost and that ongoing shelter maintenance and glass replacement is handled by the SmartBus vendor under normal service arrangements.
Council approved an appropriation of $115,705 to cover the purchase and installation, and later approved a motion to rescind an earlier award and re-award the contract to Allied Building Service using the State of Michigan contract number 01044 at a total cost of $115,704.72. Council also approved an earlier separate contract award for the sidewalk ramp program to Santos Cement Inc. (not to exceed $406,913).
Council members asked for photos of the shelter model (staff said the shelters are made in Madison Heights), confirmation that the shelters and ADA paths will be compliant, and additional information about where credits were awarded compared to other municipalities. Staff said they would provide photos and additional documentation about SMART credit allocations.
Next steps: staff will execute the state-contract procurement, install ADA-compliant access paths and provide documentation on credit use and location lists to council.
