Chair raises possible ban on student use of large language models; committee opts to seek staff recommendations

Several members and staff pushed back on an outright prohibition. One committee member said, "My initial answer is no," arguing schools should teach students how to use the tools. Staff said the district's policy service has draft language on AI and machine learning and that administration can bring recommendations to the committee and the board. "We have maintained and in some cases, we've tightened our controls of access, based upon our own observed uses outside of school that we've observed... but we can definitely bring that back to our core leadership team and to our technology director," a staff member said.
Committee members suggested placing an AI policy discussion on an upcoming agenda so the technology and instruction committees can weigh in. Staff agreed to return with draft language and recommended guardrails for committee and board consideration.
