Santa Fe Springs wins $1.5 million in Measure A park planning grants

Parks & Recreation Director Gus Hernandez told the Santa Fe Springs City Council the city was awarded $1,500,000 in Measure A funds for park design and planning work.
“The mayor or city manager, assistant city manager, and myself, attended a presentation … and we were awarded $1,500,000 towards park improvement projects,” Hernandez said, outlining $500,000 each for design of the Clark Estate Expansion Project, Lakes and Athletic Park modernization, and the River parcel project.
The grants are planning and design awards intended to position the city to apply for construction funding once designs are complete. Hernandez said the awards “will certainly set us in a good position to apply for future grant funding for development of those sites.” Council members praised staff for preparing the successful applications and noted the awards are distinct from other Measure A funds focused on homelessness.
The council took no separate vote on the grants; staff described them as planning grants that seed design work and help projects become shovel-ready. The city said it was the only city to receive three such planning awards in the round and emphasized that construction funding would require separate future applications.
Looking ahead, staff said next steps include completing project designs and returning with construction funding requests when available.
