Edwardsburg board adopts new K–5 reading and elementary social-studies curricula

The Edwardsburg Public Schools board approved new elementary curriculum materials for the 2026–27 school year, saying the selections followed committee review and teacher pilots.
Ryan Towner, presenting the recommendation from the curriculum subcommittee, said the K–5 reading adoption recommendation is HMH Into Reading and that the reading adoption costs will be covered through the grant discussed in the packet. For social studies, the subcommittee recommended Mesa units (Oakland ISD) for kindergarten and first grade and Savvas My World for grades two through five. "Our secondary teachers have textbooks in hand — their first new text in 15 years — and in K–5 we are bringing a recommendation tonight for new social studies curriculum as well," Towner said.
The packet presented the social-studies materials price at $84,713 with shipping of about $7,000. Towner said teacher committees piloted materials and reached consensus on recommendations.
The board approved the adoptions by roll call. Next steps noted by administrators included curriculum mapping, teacher professional development, and building-level implementation planning.
