The decision followed a Buildings & Utilities committee report that the plant’s current emergency generator has been in service 34 years and that replacement parts are no longer available. "It is the recommendation of this committee that legislation be prepared authorizing the director of public service and safety to advertise for bids and enter into a contract for the portable generator for the wastewater treatment plant at a cost not to exceed $325,000," the committee report said.
Council suspended the usual three‑reading rule and approved the resolution by roll call. The measure authorizes the Director of Public Service and Safety to proceed with bidding and contracting consistent with the cost cap.
The generator is intended to provide emergency power for the city's stormwater and sanitary sewer lift stations and the wastewater treatment plant during utility outages. The committee's report identified the need based on the age of the existing unit and difficulty obtaining replacement parts.
The council did not amend the dollar cap during the meeting. Next steps are procedural: solicitation of bids and return to council for any contract award as required by city procurement rules.
