Commission agrees to a 'save-the-date' utility mailer and a children's banner program for Historic Preservation Day

The Boulder City Historic Preservation Commission agreed on Feb. 26 to ask staff to publish a "save the date" notice for Historic Preservation Day in the city utility mailer and proceed with a children-designed banner program, leaving details and final scheduling for the commission to finalize at its March meeting.

A staff member told commissioners the proposal would use an April utility mailer to carry a brief “save the date” and a QR code linking to the City’s event page so residents could learn more before the full program is finalized. "So normally...this is the meeting when you would normally have to finalize the agenda activities," the staff member said, describing a plan to continue detailed planning through March and to include a QR code on the mailer to direct people to the City website.

Commissioner May’s idea to have students design the final flyer and to run a children’s banner program drew wide support. Under the concept discussed, students would design banners, the community (including children) would vote on submissions, the top banners would be displayed in the historic district during May, and winners would be announced on Historic Preservation Day. The staff member said the Commission could display selected banners for the month of May and announce winners at the event.

Commissioners discussed venues and sequencing. Suggestions included starting at Browder Bookstore at 9 a.m., holding midmorning events at the Historic Water Filtration Plant (subject to Public Works access) or the Southern Nevada Railroad Museum, and a 1 p.m. tile-making demonstration at ABC Park. Commissioner comments stressed spreading activities across community venues to maximize participation and using the museum as a backup if other venues are unavailable.

Christopher Blair, participating by phone, described himself as supportive of the proposed ideas and offered historical material on the Browder Building for staff to use in an event poster. Staff asked that any materials be sent to them so staff could coordinate with the Browder representative.

Staff affirmed they did not need a formal vote on the save-the-date and would proceed if the Commission was in agreement. The Commission indicated consensus to move forward with the save-the-date mailer, the children’s flyer initiative, and the banner program; staff will return with final venue confirmations and a detailed schedule at the next meeting.

The Commission did not take a formal, roll-call vote on the program or schedule at this meeting; details were left for the March meeting.
