Council approves adding 12.5 acres to airport map for proposed skydive drop zone

The Boulder City Council voted unanimously to add 12.5 acres to the city property map and the Boulder City Airport layout plan to accommodate a skydive drop zone, staff said during a presentation on resolution 79 60.
A staff member told the council the parcel is north of the airport, adjacent to Veterans Memorial Park and Boulder Creek Golf Course, and "stays within the same quadrant of the airport and outside of the traffic pattern, as well as meets the safety criteria outlined by the United States Parachute Association." The change would put the drop zone in the western section of the airport commercial area identified in the city's future land-use map and master plan.
Council members asked about existing interest in operating a skydive business from the site and about noise and safety. Staff said there has been interest from a previous operator to return and that the city will do site preparations and then advertise an RFP to solicit an operator. "It'll take a little bit of time. I'd say a year would be a good estimate," the staff member said.
The council moved, seconded and approved resolution 79 60. Staff said the next steps will include grading and site preparation followed by an RFP process to select an operator and to update the airport layout plan.
