Auditor requests pay increase for deputy; board defers wage change until budget work continues

Auditor/clerks’ office staff told the board a deputy’s responsibilities have increased to include claims review, payment approval, reconciliations and election support, and requested an increase beyond the deputy’s original hire rate.
The auditor asked the board to consider a $1.50 hourly increase plus an additional $1.00 to reflect new duties. Several supervisors said they appreciated the added work but raised concerns about internal pay parity with other clerks and the timing of changes during budget certification.
Legal caution was also raised: staff noted an individual in the auditor’s office has recently announced a run for elected office, and counsel had advised caution to avoid perceived retaliation related to changes in duties or pay.
After discussion, supervisors generally agreed to keep the auditor’s budget lines unchanged for publication and to address wage adjustments through the normal wage-setting process later (including a potential wage survey before next year’s budget). Board members asked staff to bring more information and to discuss wage changes at the appropriate budget meeting rather than altering the certified budget at this time.
The board did not adopt a wage change at the March 23 meeting; staff will return with additional information and possible budget amendments if supervisors later decide to increase pay.
