Onslow County Veterans Services director Laura McKinney announced a VA health‑care town hall April 21 at 3 p.m., a Vietnam Veterans Recognition Day at Lejeune Memorial Gardens on April 25 at 10 a.m., and a multi‑day Veterans Experience Action Center to help veterans with pending VA claims. Veterans Services provided contact information for appointments.
Laura McKinney, director of Onslow County Veterans Services, outlined several upcoming programs and outreach efforts for veterans.
On April 21 at 3 p.m. the VA medical center leadership team will hold a VA health care town hall at the government center for veterans to ask questions and raise concerns about VA health services. "It's a VA health care town hall," McKinney said, adding that veterans do not need to preregister.
McKinney said the department will recognize Vietnam veterans on April 25 at 10 a.m. at the Lejeune Memorial Gardens with a keynote address by Edwin Edmund Hughes the third, described in the broadcast as a retired lieutenant colonel and helicopter pilot who served in Vietnam. She also noted that the Museum of the Marine is expected to open in June.
The department plans a multi‑day Veterans Experience Action Center later in May to help veterans with pending VA claims meet with representatives and, where possible, get decisions on claims. Dates were discussed in the interview with some variation; McKinney described the event as a three‑day effort intended to reach veterans who have submitted claims and are awaiting decisions.
McKinney said the office is promoting expanded benefits under the PACT Act and urged veterans to contact Veterans Services for help with eligibility and appointments. She provided a county contact number to schedule appointments: (910) 347‑3309.
