Board approves NBSC fence agreement with requirement for board-approved signage

The Spooner Area School District board approved the NBSC fence proposal but added two amendments requiring that any signage on the fence adhere to the district’s advertising guidelines and be approved by the board before installation.

Board members raised that the draft fence agreement lacked explicit language tying fence signage to the district’s existing advertising standards. One member noted the proposal described sign funds being used for the Badgers soccer club but did not include the agreed-upon signage guidelines. To address that gap, a board member moved to amend the approval to require adherence to the district’s guidelines and to require board approval for any signage. The amendment was seconded and carried by voice vote.

Supporters said board approval would ensure signs are not offensive and would maintain consistency with other athletic-field advertising. Some members expressed concern about the administrative burden of approving every sign; others said a short pre-approval check would avoid problems. The board agreed the broader question of signage on football and other fields would be addressed on a future agenda, to ensure consistent policy districtwide.

With the signage amendment in place, the board approved the NBSC fence agreement as presented.
