County submits two congressional funding requests for water tank and cannery upgrade

County staff told the Wythe County Board of Supervisors on March 10 that the county had a short window to submit earmark requests to Congressman Griffith and had already submitted two projects for review: completion of the Watts Gap water tank and replacement and upgrade of the county cannery co‑located with a new extension office. Staff noted Senators Warner and Kaine accept joint applications with a longer window and said county staff (PIO Allison Williams and others) had been closely drafting applications to fit limited submission space.
Staff invited supervisors to propose additional projects for submission to the senators. Supervisors discussed the Jackson Elementary School project and noted some funding had already been received for that project; staff said the loan/grant mix and potential forgivable portion remained unclear and that they would continue to monitor and clarify the interaction between existing awards and new earmark opportunities.
No awards were announced; staff cautioned the county’s odds of receiving funding were long but said the requests reflected priorities in the county's capital improvement plan.
