Facilities committee says OFCC decision will shape whether Bethel pursues additions or a new school

The Bethel Local Board of Education facilities committee on March 11 sharpened its focus on an Ohio Facilities Construction Commission (OFCC) vote that members said will determine whether state funding and Facilities Management Division (FMD) work can move forward.
"We're still in a hurry-up-and-wait kind of situation until the OFCC makes their decision," said a staff member on the committee, noting the OFCC meeting was rescheduled from February and was expected March 19. The staff member said FMD would take a more active role in master planning and implementation once OFCC's allocation is decided.
Committee members said that timing matters because recent local housing growth from the Carriage Trails development is increasing student enrollment and creating pressure for more classrooms. "We're going to have to build," a committee member said, urging readiness for both additions and possible new construction depending on funding.
Members pressed for clearer involvement by the facilities committee in the district's "owner's core team," saying recommendations have sometimes been developed without committee input. The chair asked whether the committee wanted the administration to present general, early information to the public ahead of final plans; members favored cautious, noncommittal updates to foster community awareness without promising specific features.
The committee noted next steps: the regular board meets March 24, where staff may provide a more detailed update if OFCC acts; the facilities committee scheduled its next meeting for April 8 to review new information and decide on recommendations for the board.
The committee did not take a formal vote on construction direction during the meeting. Reporting back to the board and awaiting OFCC's determination were the immediate outcomes.
