Council approves Croix Park community garden; volunteers to partner with city parks

Volunteers said the first phase would install three large boxes (comprised of six 4‑by‑8 raised beds) on the park’s southern edge near the soccer field. “Essentially, what we’re asking for is just approval to start that first piece, those first initial 6 boxes, see where it goes, learn from the first year of growing,” Enzo Frasenini, a volunteer organizer, told council. Organizers said much of the material has been offered by local partners and that a portion of the produce will go to a local food pantry.
Council members and staff discussed irrigation and access; utilities staff agreed to run an irrigation connection to the site and parks staff will evaluate a nearby vehicle access route to ease plant and soil deliveries. Councilman Bonner and other members framed the garden as a community learning opportunity; the motion to approve passed unanimously.
