Belvidere police to recognize officers after suspect receives three consecutive life sentences

Belvidere Police Chief Woody told the City Council on Aug. 18 that defendant Alize Smith was sentenced to three consecutive life sentences for the murders of Andrew, Benjamin and Sebastian Hint and that the department will formally recognize the officers who worked on the investigation.
"For those who didn't see yet today, Alize Smith was sentenced to 3 consecutive life sentences for the homicides of the Hint family," Chief Woody said during the council meeting, adding that department leaders would present certificates to the officers involved in the difficult investigation.
Chief Woody said the recognition would be informal at the department level given the gravity of the case, and he extended the department's sympathies to the victims' family. The mayor and council thanked the police for their professionalism during the investigation.
The council did not take additional action related to the sentencing during the meeting.
