Board authorizes additional capital-project spending limits, copier replacement and PAC design work; approves personnel actions after executive session

The Colleton County School Board approved several funding and procurement actions Wednesday that adjust spending limits for district capital needs and move design work forward on a performing-arts project.

Operations staff asked the board to approve additional "not to exceed" funding amounts for district-wide projects. Administration presented an additional-request package that included roughly $400,000 of added authority for previously approved district-wide projects (fencing, lighting, roofing, doors/hardware) plus new-request line items totaling $583,000 for items such as painting, playgrounds and an indoor sports facility design, yielding a combined additional-request figure the administration presented as $983,000. Staff said some quotes are in hand for specific projects but not for all items; district staff described the amounts as caps so projects can proceed without returning to the board for each small approval.

After discussion about priorities and the scope of quotes, the board voted 4–3 to approve the administration's request to authorize the remaining bond-fund balance and the additional district-wide funding authority. Separately, the board approved a district-wide copier replacement (phase 2 continuation) using funds already in the copier line; that motion passed by unanimous consent.

The board also moved to authorize Moseley Architects to produce design work for the PAC (performing-arts center) watt-stopper panels and high-school gym lighting; that design authorization passed on a 4–3 vote after members noted concern about approving design costs without guaranteed funding for construction.

After moving into executive session to discuss employment matters, student release/admittance and legal advice, the board returned to open session and approved the superintendent's recommended employment contracts for the 2026–2027 school year by a 5–2 vote. The board also approved the release of five petitioned students (numbers 1–5) by unanimous consent.
