Sloan Strauss, president of the Junior Service League of Somerville, presented a $17,775 check to Dorchester schools during the March 18 board meeting. Strauss said the funds were raised through annual community events — scarecrows on the square, Christmas trees on the square and 'PJs with Santa' — and will be divided among district schools, with each school receiving $555.
Strauss noted the League’s long history of volunteer fundraising in Somerville and thanked district staff and the DD2 Foundation for coordinating the distribution. Chair thanked the League members and invited photo opportunities following the meeting.
The board did not take formal action on the donation during the meeting beyond accepting the presentation; district staff will coordinate distribution to the schools as described by the presenter.
