Forest Park administrator announces clerk office hours change; commissioners flag fire department strain and upcoming training after cemetery ICE encounter

The Forest Park administrator and council members used the Oct. 14 meeting to flag two operational concerns that affect residents and municipal staff: temporary changes to clerk office hours because of staffing shortages, and public‑safety issues raised for the fire department and by recent helicopter and immigration‑related activity.
Administrator Antler said the village will close the clerk’s office daily from 2 to 3 p.m. while the village remains short staffed and a staff member is on medical leave. "We're gonna be closing the clerk's office daily from 2 to 3PM to allow our staff to get their lunch," Antler said, adding the change is temporary and meant to preserve access during peak public hours.
Antler also responded to questions about increased helicopter flights over Forest Park, saying the county recently acquired a new helicopter that is being used to patrol Interstate 290 and to make flights out to Broadview, which explains the uptick in activity residents have reported.
On public safety, one commissioner noted the fire department is under pressure: "They continue to do an incredible job serving Forest Park even though they are facing some really serious challenges right now," the commissioner said, adding that call volumes have increased, equipment is aging and some apparatus and the station are showing their years. The commissioner said a meeting with the village administrator and the fire chief is scheduled at the end of the month to begin a strategic plan to address staffing, equipment and long‑term facility needs.
Mayor Hoskins addressed a recent encounter involving U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement at a Forest Park cemetery and said a community training session on de‑escalation and best practices for encounters with ICE or law enforcement will be held Sunday, Oct. 19 at 6 p.m., with registration coordinated through the village. "This training is set for next Sunday, this coming Sunday, October 19 at 6PM," Mayor Hoskins said.
What comes next: administrators will carry out the temporary change to clerk office hours and post/update the clerk vacancy; the village will pursue the planned meeting among the administrator, the fire chief and council to develop a strategic plan; and the scheduled community training will be coordinated by the village as announced by the mayor.
No formal policy or budget amendment was adopted at this meeting to immediately fund fire‑department capital or staffing needs; council members expressed support for moving to a planning phase to identify priorities and funding options.
