Two Ward 3 candidates introduce themselves to council ahead of Feb. 2 decision

At the Jan. 20 council meeting Mayor introduced three applicants for the Ward 3 vacancy; two — Tracy Hernandez and Adeja Franco — were present to introduce themselves and answer questions.
Tracy Hernandez, who said she has lived in West Chicago for about 45 years and works in District 33 with kindergarten students with special needs, described advocacy for children and community engagement as priorities. “Advocating for children and for the growth and for them to have voice,” Hernandez told the council, explaining her interest in increasing family participation and inclusive programming.
Adeja Franco said she has lived in West Chicago for more than 25 years, works with community arts and education organizations, and seeks to amplify Spanish-speaking residents. Franco said she has volunteered with the Mexican Cultural Center of DuPage and community culinary programs and is eager to be a voice for children and Spanish-speaking families.
Council members asked both candidates about inclusion for neurodivergent residents in downtown revitalization planning; candidates and council members suggested sensory-friendly playground elements, outreach to schools and workshops to build a supportive community. The mayor said the council hopes to vote and seat the Ward 3 appointee at its Feb. 2 meeting and invited Ward 3 residents to offer input before that date.
