La Grange trustees to consider e-bike regulations after fatal crash nearby and local safety reports

"That tragedy is a sober reminder that it's an important public safety topic, which we do as a board intend to discuss the next 2 meetings in October," President Kugler said, noting a recent fatality in Arlington Heights involving an e-bike rider and that staff have received numerous emails, including from an LT civics class, suggesting limits such as requiring a driver’s license or permit for some e-bike riders.
Trustee Thompson described recent local enforcement activity and safety risks: "I was parking in the garage and a 12 year 11 or 12 year old kid on an ... e-bike, no lights, was riding through the garage, pulling wheelies up and down the ramps. It's dark in there, people backing out of parking places. That's just a child chancing his life on stuff like that." He urged citizens and the board to consider tougher regulations similar to neighboring municipalities.
President Kugler said the board will reach out to neighboring mayors and village presidents to learn what measures they have enacted and to pursue a consistent approach where possible. The board invited residents to attend upcoming meetings to share input on possible regulation and enforcement options.
Next steps: the board will schedule discussion over the next two meetings and solicit public input.
