Residents press La Grange for more traffic controls on Brainerd Avenue; police explain stop-sign request process

Mike Murphy, who lives on Brainerd Avenue, addressed trustees about vehicle speeds and pedestrian safety on the one-mile stretch between 47th and 55th. Murphy said the stretch lacks stop signs and described situations in which drivers pass him and unsafe crosswalk behavior occurs.
"It's the only one-mile stretch of road in the village without a stop sign, without a traffic light," Murphy said, and asked the board to add at least two stop signs near his house.
President Kugler asked Murphy what he proposed and noted intersection and traffic features nearby. Chief Griffin described the village procedure: residents file a stop-sign request with the police department; a committee reviews requests quarterly using crash data and on-site observations and then presents findings to the management team. "It's a group decision amongst the management team," Griffin said, adding that the police have conducted traffic enforcement on Brainerd and will continue observational reviews.
Murphy said he would follow up with the department and warned he would return if nothing changes. The meeting record does not include a specific timeline for installation of new signs or any vote on changes to Brainerd traffic controls.
