Broadview approves $15,785 to replace outdated firehouse cord reels for safety compliance

The Broadview Board of Trustees voted 6-0 to authorize $15,785 to address safety issues with cord reels in the village firehouse.
Fire Chief Martin told the board that an inspection found that "none of the cord reels are to code" and described the reels as old and improperly grounded. He said the work will replace five cord-reel assemblies (serving two engines, two ambulances and one spare), add proper ground-fault protection and include use of a rental lift for installation.
Chief Martin said the reels charge critical life-saving equipment and that installing proper ground-fault circuits will locate resets near each reel so crews can quickly address an electrical fault, particularly when equipment gets wet.
Trustees voted on a motion to approve the funds and the clerk recorded the motion as carrying unanimously.
Why it matters: The replacement addresses an immediate safety risk to first responders and ensures the village's fire equipment charging circuits meet the code the village has adopted.
