Wauconda honors four teens for reporting handgun found on sidewalk

According to the mayor’s account, two of the youths remained at the scene to ensure no one else contacted the weapon while the other two rode to the Wauconda Police Department to report the discovery. "Your quick thinking and mature judgment demonstrate a profound commitment to public safety and a clear understanding of what is right," the mayor said while presenting certificates of recognition.
The board thanked the teens and their parents and posed for photos; no formal action or vote was required. The mayor noted the recognition was in appreciation of actions taken independently by the young people to protect the public.
