Georgetown committee recommends stop signs, speed-calming measures at neighborhood intersections

Georgetown’s Street & Alley Committee recommended adding stop signs at Stone & Pearl, Vermilion & Pearl, 14th Street & Guy and 14th Street & Grace at its Sept. 2 meeting and asked staff to check with the state about placing stops at Mill & Seminary and Mill & Church.
Alder Mitch Weaver, who moved the recommendation, said the signs are aimed at slowing motorists and reducing distracted driving. “Too many people are on their cell phones and not paying attention,” Weaver said.
Chief Renaker told the committee the police department has budgeted for removable speed bumps that would be placed around the park next spring as a temporary calming measure. Committee members also discussed portable radar speed trailers that can be moved between locations; the minutes record a unit cost of about $12,000.
The committee voted to forward the stop-sign recommendations to the full City Council for consideration. The motion was made by Alder Mitch Weaver, seconded by Alder Steffanie Lyons, and recorded as approved. The committee adjourned at 6:32 p.m.
If the council approves the recommendations, the City will pursue state approval for stops on state-controlled streets at Mill & Seminary and Mill & Church before installing signs there. No timetable or funding source for the sign installations beyond the police department’s spring plan for removable bumps was specified in the minutes.
