Georgetown City Council approves local events, batting cages and routine bills; tables community solar and health insurance

The Georgetown City Council met Sept. 2 in the Council Chamber and approved a slate of routine business and community events while deferring decisions on two items that may affect city contracts and employee benefits.
The council authorized payment of List 892 — 27 vendor payments totaling $39,884.90 — and approved the Aug. 18 meeting minutes (the minutes vote passed 7–0 with Ald. Jack Morrison recorded as abstaining). The council also approved a clerk’s report listing several recently issued permits.
Treasurer Amy Cavanaugh briefed the council on a proposed community‑solar arrangement and said the contract appears to be a five‑year agreement; she asked that the council review the contract before moving forward. The council tabled the community‑solar item for a future meeting. Separately, the council discussed a new health‑insurance option with a lower premium and directed Clerk Jacqueline Wilson to gather additional information; that item was also tabled.
Alan Baldwin presented plans from the GRF Men’s Club for permanent batting cages to be built east of the park bathrooms. The facility would be 50–70 feet long and 12–15 feet wide, use chain‑link fencing and a low‑maintenance surface (concrete, pea gravel or astroturf), be lockable and require no power. The council approved the project and asked the city superintendent to confirm site suitability.
The council approved the Lion’s Club’s request to collect at the square for Candy Day on Oct. 9; the motion passed 6–1 (the minutes do not identify the dissenting vote). The meeting also included routine departmental reports (streets & alleys; water & sewer; public safety) and announcements, including the recent death of librarian Kim Murdock.
