Macomb Council approves reapplying for BUILD grants for Candy Lane safety upgrades and citywide multi-use path

City staff told the Macomb City Council they will reapply to a federal BUILD grant program for two projects: safety and roadway improvements on Candy Lane and a long-discussed citywide multi-use path.
Miss Bittenstead, the staff presenter, said the administration's change from the RAISE to BUILD program required edits to earlier applications and additional data. "When the administration changed there was some language that they no longer deemed acceptable," she said, explaining the city gathered new metrics, including speed-monitoring data and a resident survey, to document safety needs on Candy Lane.
Staff said the BUILD program allows up to $25 million for qualifying applications and, because the city is in a designated area of persistent poverty, the applications would not require a local match. City Administrator Cesar Suarez noted that the team tightened the application after debrief feedback and is seeking to reapply quickly.
Council members expressed support for moving forward; motions to authorize the city to submit both the Candy Lane corridor and the citywide multi-use path applications were made, seconded and approved by roll call (unanimous votes recorded).
