Brian Rittenhouse told the council PJ Hair estimated the repair cost at $321,000 while the city’s insurer placed the estimate around $304,000. Rittenhouse said the insurer had issued approximately $304,000 to date and the remaining roughly $36,000 would be payable upon completion.
Staff recommended contracting PJ Hair because the firm prepared the cost estimate in coordination with the city’s insurance review. The council voted 7–0 to authorize the contract not to exceed $340,000.
Alderperson Blundy asked whether the council should consider additional funding for exterior improvements after repairs are complete, citing visual improvements along approaches to the Washington Square. The council did not act on that request at this meeting; the conversation was referred for future discussion depending on final repair costs and needs.
The authorization allows the city to move forward with repairs and final submission to the insurer; staff said the remaining insurance balance would be received upon completion and any shortfall would be determined then.
