Macomb City Township board raises general assistance line, adopts amended budget ordinance

The Macomb City Township board approved an amended annual budget and appropriation ordinance on a motion passed unanimously after a public hearing. The action increases the general assistance line item to $220,000 for the fiscal year beginning May 1, 2025, and ending April 30, 2026.
During the hearing the township supervisor (S7) told the board the current budget underestimated client costs: "As of today, we have already spent $112,200," the supervisor said, adding that about $76,000 of that has gone to rent and shelter and $36,200 to food, household and utilities. "So I'm asking for an increase of a $100,000 for that line item for our clients' uses." The supervisor said the township has more than $300,000 in the general assistance fund across accounts and plans to draw $50,000 from two savings accounts, which would not exhaust reserves.
City attorney (S8) read Ordinance No. 181 into the record and the board then moved to adopt the ordinance; the motion passed on roll call with all ayes and Chair (S1) announced the motion carried. The ordinance modifies only the general assistance fund line item.
The ordinance will be reflected in the township's fiscal-year budget documents for May 1, 2025–April 30, 2026. No further amendments were discussed at the meeting; the board proceeded to other township and council business.
