Macomb council authorizes grant application to restore Oakwood Cemetery gravestones

The Macomb City Council on Monday authorized staff to submit a grant application on behalf of Oakwood Cemetery to fund professional restoration of aging and damaged gravestones.
Mayor Michael Jamon introduced the item and turned the matter over to city staff. City staff member Ortman said the grant would pay for work that is beyond the capacity of in-house crews, including resetting broken stones and replacing concrete footings. "Mike found this grant, which will give money to restore these tombstones," Ortman said, explaining the request would supplement the roughly $3,000 the city currently budgets for cemetery upkeep.
Alderman Dorset asked whether the grant—tied to funding aimed at abandoned or neglected cemeteries—would be applicable to Oakwood. Ortman said she reread the funding notice and believes Oakwood qualifies. After discussion, a motion to authorize filing the application was made, seconded and approved by roll call, recorded as a unanimous vote.
The council did not set a dollar amount for the city's request at the meeting; staff said the grant would cover professional restoration needs that exceed regular maintenance funds. The next step is for staff to finalize and submit the application by the grant deadline.
