Hampshire authorizes purchase and upfitting of two police squad vehicles

The Hampshire Village Board on May 15 authorized the purchase and upfitting of two police squad vehicles, approving a waiver of bidding requirements to proceed with a local supplier and upfitter, staff said.
Police Chief Pan told the board the purchase would increase available fleet vehicles in the near term and allow the department to assign a vehicle to a planned full-time detective later in the year. The chief cited a favorable price, upfitting work by a local vendor and an extended five-year/100,000-mile warranty being included at no additional charge.
Staff and trustees reviewed the numbers in the packet and a supplemental three-page memo; staff corrected a line-item figure during the discussion (supplement amount shown at one point as about $115,044.48) and confirmed the full cost was included in the FY26 vehicle line item. Trustees confirmed there is sufficient funding in the vehicle line to complete the purchase without a budget amendment.
A motion to waive bidding requirements and authorize the purchase and upfitting was moved, seconded and approved by roll-call vote. Trustees also discussed long-term fleet strategy and said one older vehicle would be shifted to reserve status when the new vehicles enter service.
What happens next: Staff will arrange delivery and upfitting, and the police department will coordinate placement of new in-car computers and radar equipment; Chief Pan said the new units will be placed in service as staffing and schedules allow.
