Aldermen discuss parking-code changes in Georgetown annex after emergency-access concern

The Macomb City Council Committee of the Whole discussed an ordinance to amend parking sections of the municipal code for areas annexed from Georgetown, with aldermen citing emergency access and historic street patterns as primary reasons for the change.
Alderman Edmond White said the changes stem from streets in the Georgetown annex that historically lack driveways or parking bays. He told the council the fire chief reported difficulty getting a vehicle to the top of Arlington Drive after a cardiac response because cars were parked on both sides of the street, forcing the response vehicle to back down the hill. "So that's really why it came to us to do these modifications," White said, adding the revisions align the code to historic street usage.
Council and staff clarified that the proposal will not broadly remove parking in other neighborhoods but will add targeted no-parking segments where necessary for safety. Staff also reported a church on Adams Street (Wesley Church) asked for a small extension of no-parking near its single entrance to improve sight lines; staff said the ordinance will add a no-parking area on the south side of Adams Street adjacent to the church entrance.
With that staff amendment noted, the chair said the parking ordinance will be scheduled for second reading and final action at the Feb. 2 council meeting.
No final vote on the ordinance occurred at the Committee of the Whole meeting; staff and aldermen said the ordinance's maps and specific street-by-street language are in the council packet for review ahead of second reading.
