Southeast Polk operations outline summer projects including security film, accessibility upgrades

Operations staff presented a prioritized list of summer improvement projects the district plans to complete between the end of school and the start of next year.

The presentation, delivered by operations staff (Speaker 5), listed safety and security upgrades first. Staff proposed installing impact-resistant window film on remaining building entryways to delay forced entry and give staff time to respond; the films are not ballistics-rated but are intended to reduce easy break-ins. “It's to buy time,” the operations presenter said of the film installations.

Planned accessibility and space-improvement work includes a renovation of the Empower You life-skills lab adjacent to the district office and Harbor program, improving accessibility and cabinetry so students (12+) can practice employment and daily living skills. Exterior and site improvements will address concrete steps and paving with drainage issues that can create slip-trip hazards and ice buildup. Finish improvements include completing blind installations at the middle school for energy efficiency and occupant comfort, painting and targeted flooring work, and exterior sealant and concrete repairs focused on elementary school gymnasiums.

Operations staff said most projects are under engineer-estimate thresholds that require full plans and specifications; instead, the district plans to use competitive quotes and local vendors to deliver the work this summer. Staff expressed confidence the scope is manageable within the summer timeframe and procurement approach. The facilities committee will present a more detailed project list at a future meeting.
