Jessica Brightfield, representing Habitat for Humanity of LaSalle, Bureau and Putnam counties, presented a proposal for a partnership with the city of Oglesby to build an affordable single‑family home on a donated lot with water and sewer hookups.
Brightfield said Habitat’s model does not give away homes; families contribute sweat equity and then pay an affordable mortgage. She asked the city to consider donating a buildable residential lot with utilities and to participate in the family‑selection committee. Brightfield described fundraising approaches used in nearby builds—local business donations, in‑kind trade contributions, auctions and events—and estimated that volunteer labor and donor contributions substantially reduce construction costs. She said Habitat has completed recent builds in Princeton and is prepared to provide sample documents and next steps to the council.
Councilmembers asked whether Habitat would rehabilitate an existing structure or prefer a new build; Brightfield said new builds are often more cost‑effective for the organization. Council members discussed logistics, the potential for city staff support, and how volunteers could participate. The council directed staff to continue communications with Habitat to gather more detailed project information and possible next steps; no formal donation or agreement was approved at the meeting.
