Oak Harbor swears in Bill Harris as deputy fire chief; city readies new station and paramedic program

Oak Harbor on March 17 swore in Bill Harris as its newest deputy fire chief during a brief ceremony at the start of the City Council meeting.
Fire Chief Travis Anderson introduced Harris and administered the oath, saying Harris “comes to us from Anacortes” and has served in Sunnyside, Washington. Anderson told the council the department has new recruits completing academy training, new apparatus arriving and a paramedic program launching. “We’re gonna be ready to staff [the new fire station] on June 1,” Anderson said.
Bill Harris repeated the oath to assume his duties as deputy fire chief. Chief Anderson described Harris as “already a proven leader,” and said the additions to staffing and equipment will improve the department’s response capacity.
Also during the meeting Mayor presented the “We See You” recognition to two people for their arts-commission service and honored Danny Ledgerwood and Duncan McPhee for a January marina water rescue in which city staff helped a tenant who slipped from a deck.
The council did not take further action tied to the fire-department presentation; the mayor and chief framed the remarks as an introduction of personnel and updates on expected department resources and community outreach.
The meeting continued with routine business and a series of consent-agenda votes; the council adjourned at 5:57 p.m.
