Commission approves Eagle Scout project to add two little libraries and benches at Loch Laron nature playground

The Park and Recreation Commission voted unanimously March 26 to approve Peyton Stein's Eagle Scout project to install two little free libraries and two benches at the Loch Laron nature playground.
Courtney (parks staff) introduced Peyton before he showed images and described the project. "My Eagle Scout project is going inside of the nature center, and it's gonna be 2 libraries," Peyton said, adding that one library will be adult height and one child height and that two Leopold-style benches will be installed so parents can sit while children read or play.
Courtney and other commissioners discussed location options; Courtney identified a spot "along that back of the fence" on the path toward the overlook deck as the preferred placement because the existing free library near Loch Laron is deteriorating. Peyton said he expects to complete the work by mid spring, though weather could push the finish closer to mid-May.
Commissioners asked about durability and vandalism prevention; one commissioner recommended using plexiglass or safety glass for the little libraries. The commission moved, seconded and approved the project as submitted.
The decision allows Peyton to proceed with fundraising, final construction plans and placement coordination with city staff. The commission did not attach conditions beyond the city standard permitting and placement approvals; the project will be carried out under the usual oversight of parks staff.
