Summary
Council confirmed five appointments to the Human Services Commission, appointed a member to the Equity, Cultural and Social Justice Commission, and presented awards to three volunteers including 2025 commissioner of the year David Cottle.
At its March 10 meeting the Covington City Council confirmed a slate of commission appointments and recognized outstanding volunteers.
Council approved appointments to the Human Services Commission after interviews held before the council meeting. The following appointments were made by voice vote: Leslie Hamada (position 1, term expiring 03/31/2029), Sarah Parker (position 2, term expiring 03/31/2029), Anne Magner (position 5, term expiring 03/31/2029), Jade Heron (position 4, term expiring 03/31/2028), and Casey Hogan (position 7, term expiring 03/31/2028). One council member recused from the Casey Hogan vote. Members who nominated and supported candidates cited applicants’ community service, lived experience in recovery, and capacity to connect residents to services.
The council also appointed Sarah McKendricks to position 7 on the Equity, Cultural and Social Justice Commission with a term expiring 09/30/2027. Council members noted McKendricks’s background in legal aid and her interest in cultural inclusion and outreach.
Before the appointments, the council presented its annual volunteer awards. Mayor Pro Tem Porter introduced the 2025 youth volunteer of the year, Tricia Cal Lee; the volunteer of the year, Damandeep ("Daman") Katra, who serves on the economic development council and planning commission; and David Cottle, named commissioner of the year for his work on the planning commission. Cottle said he was "deeply honored" and credited fellow commissioners, staff and residents.
Next steps: New appointees will begin serving their terms on the respective commissions; the city will update commission rosters and staff will follow up about orientation and meeting schedules.
