Mayor: proposed jail site can be raised out of floodplain; engineer to study water impacts

Trousdale County Mayor Jack told commissioners that a site under consideration for a new county jail can likely be raised out of the floodplain, but he said engineers need to study drainage and downstream effects before the county can get firm cost estimates.
"We got a good report," Mayor Jack said, describing a site visit by a Tema representative and scheduling an engineer to begin field work this week. He said Spirit Architects is waiting on site preparation to provide detailed construction numbers.
Commissioner Thomas pressed for an engineer analysis of how raising the bank would affect water speed downstream and potential consequences for ball fields, a football field and nearby businesses. "We don't want to push more troubles down onto us," Thomas said, urging study of downstream impacts.
The mayor said the engineering work will consider all possibilities, including a retaining pond behind the fire hall if needed to control run-off. He also said the fill material would be provided at no cost to the county and that staff said the county has temporary storage for the material while site work proceeds.
No final decision was made during the meeting; the administration asked engineers to study floodplain mitigation, drainage and site-preparation logistics and return with a report that will inform cost estimates and schedule.
